ELECTIVE CAESAR vs NATURAL CHILDBIRTH
This is a statement by obstetrician Dr Douglas
Dumbrill.
One in three mothers in South Africa who delivers in the public sector gives birth via Caesarean section. In the private sector, two in three mothers or more deliver their babies via Caesarean section. It’s a trend that has been steadily increasing over the past decade. In 1985, the World Health Organisation recommended a target rate of 15 per cent, which was calculated by experts but no data was issued to support this figure.
There is no doubt that too many Caesareans are being performed. Both patients and doctors are responsible for this. All prospective parents, midwives and doctors have a common aim: a healthy mom and healthy baby. However, our views and perspectives differ.
What is your view on this new trend of “designer
childbirth”? Start blogging.
Hi Pastor
This is a very interesting topic for discussion. I am 34 weeks pregnant with my second daughter and there’s not a shadow of doubt the birth option I’ve chosen. I am certainly electing for a birth through C-Section.
I mean why go through the mess & fuss over natural birth when we have this C-Section available to us. I have an opportunity to go through natural birth even though my first pregnancy was an emergency caesar, but again I ask the question, why worry about going through a panic-stricken state when you can be organised.
So right now I have already diarised the second week of September and I’m certain that my gynae has also turned down any golf challenges or off-road racing during that week.

We wish you everything of the best in the weeks ahead.
c-section
Healthy moms and healthy babies won’t keep you up,they will cost you less. HOW SAD $$$
The c -section in my opinion is a quick shop, think about it,how much medication does a healthy person or baby need ?,
Science might have its reasons, however the stats cannot in most reserch be verified,One can not compare sick, diseased and dying mothers to healthy mothers and say it is a better option. BETTER ACCORDING TO WHO ?
If we who represent Christ and believe in the God of the bible, then i have news for you !…. the curse is broken
Pain at child birth was a curse, If Jesus broke every curse on the cross. I submit to you that mothers could have natural birth without pain.Let us learn how to live in the season of grace. In the very essence of God,his nature and character.
Your opinion is of great value !
Today many pregnant women have a choice between delivering via an elective caesarian section or natural childbirth. Often expectant mothers are not aware of all the facts in order to make an informed decision.
Caesarian Section:
Delivery via elective caesarean section has increased dramatically over the past few years and this has been influenced by many factors including convenience, fear of pain and cosmetic considerations.
• Caesarean deliveries are much safer now due to advancements in medical and surgical techniques. It is also potentially lifesaving when it is performed for medical reasons (i.e. severe pregnancy-related hypertension/heart conditions) or complications during pregnancy or labour.
• However, it is still considered major abdominal surgery, which means the procedure carries more risks than a normal delivery. These risks include infection, anaesthetic reactions and surgical complications. There is also more pain involved afterwards and it may be difficult for you to breastfeed.
• A caesarean delivery is recommended for HIV-positive mothers in order to decrease the risk of transmitting the virus to your newborn.
Natural Childbirth:
• With a normal delivery the risk of maternal death is about five times lower. Although the risk of incontinence or pelvic floor disorders is slightly higher after normal delivery, all women are at risk of this after pregnancy.
• The pain associated with labour and childbirth is one of the main reasons for elective caesarean sections, however you may opt for an epidural injection to eliminate the pain.
• The recovery period after a normal delivery is about two days and for a caesarean section up to two weeks, although many women may recover earlier.
• If you are an HIV-positive woman and wish to have a normal delivery, you should discuss it with your caregiver. Normal delivery may be considered if you are monitored throughout the pregnancy, use antiretroviral medication or your viral load is very low.
Benefits of Normal delivery: Regardless of the situation, every woman of childbearing age must know the following benefits about normal birth:
• Normal born babies delivered through the vagina are always healthier than medically born babies such as those in test tubes experimentation or when the child is premature. This is because they are born naturally by their mother as such they should be born. They have attained the required period of gestation. Medications may be dangerous to mother and child
• Figures have shown that most medically delivered babies are born before maturity and even before labor. Studies have also shown that catecholamine is mostly found in children from normal birth This contains a greater part of the hormones necessary for the baby’s survival and is secreted from mother to child in larger amounts during childbirth paving way for the baby’s survival outside the womb.
• Babies born via natural birth have stronger lungs adapted in time to carry oxygen to the body tissues. They will never be kept in test tubes or other intensive care units which may expose them to respiratory problems. Related to this is the fact that they enjoy early contact with their mothers after birth. It is disheartening to separate mother from child.
• Another advantage is that both mother and child leave hospital early. Medicated mothers and babies will have to be clinically examined and may at times be hospitalized to check for a number of newborn problems. This, of course will be more expensive. Caesarian section births pose future complications to subsequent pregnancies and childbirths.

Thanks for your professional opinion Dianne !
Even though I may have missed the boat on this topic i will like to add that any thing is life be it tangible or intangible, has more value if there is pain attached to it.
Pain has the magnificent power of added worth. For example you may not appreciate what is handed to you on a platter as much as you would appreciate what you have earned by the sweat of your brow.
Pain adds worthy and it makes the bearer more protective over what they have attained, Hence i feel that natural child birth may be the best way to go as it creates a uncanny bond between mother and child.
Its just my opinion
Hi Suriya !
Welcome to the “Changing Perspectives” site. Your comments on pain is absolutely true. As believers we are not immune to the challenges and suffering life brings our way. The purpose of any trial is to perfect our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
Our position is one of dominion; the Lord has set up a table for us in the midst of our enemies; in the midst of our trials and persecutions. Read Psalm 23 for encouragement.
Ps 23:5
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.
Stay encouraged; strengthen your mind with God’s promises.
