THE FIRST CALL
Jonah 1:1-2
1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.”
Jonah was given a specific message from the Eternal Father for the city of Nineveh, the capital of Assyria. The eyes of the Father observed great wickedness. The message of the preacher was to preach against the wicked ruling principalities that reign over the city of Nineveh. This city glories in its wealth and its success, but it has been disqualified by the sight of God; but the love and the mercy of God sends His representative Jonah to call this city to repentance.
THE SECOND CALL
Jonah 3
1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.”
Jonah did not prepare a message. The message was given to him by the Eternal Father. His responsibility was to go to Nineveh.
THE MESSAGE FROM GOD HUMBLED THE KING AND INHABITANTS OF THE GREAT CITY
Jonah 3:5
5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.
6 Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes.
THE DECLARATION AND RESOLUTION OF THE KING
Jonah 3:8-9
8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. 9 Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish?
THE MERCY AND COMPASSION OF GOD
Jonah 4:10-11
10 But the Lord said, “You have had pity on the plant for which you have not labored, nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night. 11 And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left—and much livestock?”
Conclusion
We see a clear process in the timeline of the salvation of this city.
1. The Father sends His representative, His oracle to declare His message
John 7:15-16
15 And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?”
16 Jesus answered them and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me.
2. Jonah resisted the call to go, but after much tribulation Jonah eventually obeyed the call of God. Jonah did exactly what the Father expected.
3. The king and the inhabitants responded with great humility when they heard the message of God.
4. The response of the city moved the heart of the Father to relent and demonstrate His compassion over the city.

A PRIMEIRA CHAMADA
Jonas 1
1 Ora veio a palavra do Senhor a Jonas, filho de Amitai, dizendo:
2 Levanta-te, vai à grande cidade de Nínive, e clama contra ela, porque a sua malícia subiu até mim.
Jonas recebeu uma mensagem específica do Pai Eterno para a cidade de Nínive, a capital da Assíria. Os olhos do Pai observaram grande maldade. A mensagem do pregador era pregar contra os principados dominantes perversos que reina sobre a cidade de Nínive. Esta cidade gloriosa em sua riqueza e seu sucesso, mas foi desqualificada pela visão de Deus; mas o amor e a misericórdia de Deus enviam o seu representante Jonas para chamar essa cidade do arrependimento.
A SEGUNDA CHAMADA DE DEUS A JONAS
Jonas 3
1 Pela segunda vez veio a palavra do Senhor a Jonas, dizendo:
2 Levanta-te, e vai à grande cidade de Nínive, e lhe proclama a mensagem que eu te ordeno.
Jonas não preparou uma mensagem. A mensagem lhe foi dada pelo Pai Eterno. Sua responsabilidade era ir para Nínive.
A MENSAGEM DE DEUS HUMILOU O REI E OS HABITANTES DA GRANDE CIDADE
Jonas 3
5 E os homens de Nínive creram em Deus; e proclamaram um jejum, e vestiram-se de saco, desde o maior deles até o menor.
6 A notícia chegou também ao rei de Nínive; e ele se levantou do seu trono e, despindo-se do seu manto e cobrindo-se de saco, sentou-se sobre cinzas.
A DECLARAÇÃO E RESOLUÇÃO DO REI
Jonas 3: 8-9
8 mas sejam cobertos de saco, tanto os homens como os animais, e clamem fortemente a Deus; e convertam-se, cada um do seu mau caminho, e da violência que há nas suas mãos.
9 Quem sabe se se voltará Deus, e se arrependerá, e se apartará do furor da sua ira, de sorte que não pereçamos?
A MISERICÓRDIA E COMPASSÃO DE DEUS
Jonas 4: 10-11
10 Disse, pois, o Senhor: Tens compaixão da aboboreira, na qual não trabalhaste, nem a fizeste crescer; que numa noite nasceu, e numa noite pereceu.
11 E não hei de eu ter compaixão da grande cidade de Nínive em que há mais de cento e vinte mil pessoas que não sabem discernir entre a sua mão direita e a esquerda, e também muito gado?
Conclusão
Vemos um processo claro na linha do tempo da salvação desta cidade.
1. O Pai envia Seu representante, Seu oráculo para declarar Sua mensagem
João 7: 15-16
15 E os judeus se maravilharam, dizendo: “Como esse homem conhece cartas, nunca estudou?”
16 Jesus respondeu-lhes e disse: “Minha doutrina não é minha, mas a que me enviou.
2. Jonas resistiu ao chamado para ir, mas depois de muita tribulação, Jonas finalmente obedeceu o chamado de Deus. Jonah fez exatamente o que o Pai esperava.
3. O rei e os habitantes responderam com grande humildade quando ouviram a mensagem de Deus.
4. A resposta da cidade moveu o coração do Pai para se arrepender e demonstrar Sua compaixão pela cidade.
