REVERENTIAL FEAR OF GOD

HEBREW WORD FOR FEAR

ēymāh: A feminine noun meaning fear, terror, dread, or horror. The basic meaning is that of fear. It is used to signify the dread of the darkness that fell on Abraham (Genesis 15:12); a fear of hostile opponents (Joshua 2:9; Ezra 3:3); the terror of the Lord’s judgment (Exodus 15:16; 23:27; Job 9:34); dread of the wrath of an earthly king (Proverbs 20:2); something fierce or fearsome (Job 39:20)

GREEK WORD FOR FEAR

phóbos; phóbou, noun from phébomai, to flee from. Fear, terror, reverence, respect, honor.

RECEPTION OF REPRESENTATIVES AND MESSENGERS OF THE LORD 

Cities, nations and governments must also fear the Lord. This is a healthy, reverential respect and awe for the “ēymāh” (the terror of the Judgement of the Lord)

This is a fear of the Name and Reputation of the Lord that must be respected and revered when cities, nations and governments engage the Lord through His Messengers, Servants and Representatives. 

Exodus 23:20 Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. 21 Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him. 22 But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries. 23 For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off. 24 Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images. 25 And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee. 26 There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil. 27 I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee.

THE TWO SPIES IN JERICHO The inhabitants of the city of Jericho were aware of the Name and the reputation of the GOD of the two spies. The people of Jericho were “faint hearted” because of the Manifest Presence of God” that was discerned by Rahab when these two spies came to her house.  The Name and reputation of the “GOD of the spies” preceded them. 

Joshua 2:8 Now before they lay down, she came up to them on the roof, 9 and said to the men: “I know that the LORD has given you the land, that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are fainthearted because of you. 10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. 11 And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted; neither did there remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.

MOSES AND PHARAOH  Pharaoh witnessed the manifestation of the Presence and power of God through the various plagues; however, Pharaoh responded inaccurately. He “hardened his heart”.

Exodus 7:13 And Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the LORD had said.

NINEVEH’S RECEPTION OF THE MESSAGE OF JONAH This is the message given to His prophet Jonah by God to be delivered to the great city Nineveh concerning the endemic wickedness in that city…..

Jonah 1:1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.”

Jonah 3:4 And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. Then he cried out and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”

The Fear of the Lord manifested by the king and the people of Nineveh 

Jonah 3:5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them. 6 Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes. 7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying,

Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water. 8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. 9 Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish?

THE FEAR OF GOD DEMONSTRATED THROUGH THE RECEPTION OF THE MESSENGER OF GOD BRINGS DELIVERANCE TO THE WHOLE CITY OF NINEVEH

Jonah 3:10 Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.

JESUS TEACHES AN IMPORTANT CAUTION CONCERNING THE FEAR OF GOD

Matthew 10:27 “Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

The revelations shared by Jesus are meant to be shared from the roof of the house (for public knowledge)

Sons of God must not be intimidated by the threat of public persecution to declare the Word of the Lord. Jesus teaches His disciples to preserve our souls rather than succumb to the fear of persecution.

REVERENTIAL FEAR OF GOD

This is the fear of God that inspires the believer to love, respect and obey God.

Exodus 3:6 Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.

God acknowledges that this is a normal response. 

Jeremiah 5:22 Do you not fear Me?’ says the LORD. ‘Will you not tremble at My presence, Who have placed the sand as the bound of the sea, By a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass beyond it?And though its waves toss to and fro, Yet they cannot prevail; Though they roar, yet they cannot pass over it.

Hebrews 12:21 And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I am exceedingly afraid and trembling.”

Acts 2:43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. (Acts 5:11; Acts 9:31)

God’s Presence constantly inspired fear. The believer’s fear of God is not based on a fear of death and punishment because Christ has set us free from this (Romans 8:1). Because God’s Presence inspired fear, God announced “Fear not” whenever His Presence manifested. 

Revelation 1:17 And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last.

God, our Heavenly Father, who loves us, is also a consuming fire (Hebrews 12:29)

OS DOIS ESPIÕES EM JERICÓ Os habitantes da cidade de Jericó estavam cientes do Nome e da reputação do DEUS dos dois espiões. O povo de Jericó era “de coração fraco” por causa da Presença Manifesta de Deus” que foi percebida por Raabe quando esses dois espiões vieram à sua casa. O nome e a reputação do “DEUS dos espiões” os precederam.

Josué 2:8 Antes de se deitarem, ela se aproximou deles no telhado, 9 e disse aos homens: “Sei que o SENHOR vos deu a terra, que o terror de vocês caiu sobre nós, e que todos os habitantes da terra são fracos por causa de vocês. 10 Pois ouvimos como o SENHOR secou as águas do Mar Vermelho por vocês quando saíram do Egito, e o que fizeram aos dois reis amorreus que estavam do outro lado do Jordão, Sihon e Og, que vocês destruíram completamente. 11 E assim que ouvimos essas coisas, nossos corações derreteram; nem restava coragem em ninguém por sua causa, pois o SENHOR seu Deus, Ele é Deus no céu acima e na terra abaixo.

MOISÉS E FARAÓ O Faraó testemunhou a manifestação da Presença e do poder de Deus através das várias pragas; no entanto, o Faraó respondeu de forma imprecisa. Ele “endureceu seu coração”.

Êxodo 7:13 E o coração do Faraó se encolheu, e ele não os ouviu, como o SENHOR havia dito.

A RECEPÇÃO DA MENSAGEM DE JONAS POR NÍNIVE Esta é a mensagem dada ao seu profeta Jonas por Deus para ser entregue à grande cidade de Nínive sobre a maldade endêmica daquela cidade…..

Jonas 1:1 Agora a palavra do SENHOR chegou a Jonas, filho de Amitai, dizendo: 2 “Levanta-te, vai até Nínive, aquela grande cidade, e clamai contra ela; pois sua maldade surgiu diante de mim.”

Jonas 3:4 E Jonas começou a entrar na cidade no primeiro dia de caminhada. Então ele gritou e disse: “Ainda quarenta dias, e Nínive será derrubada!”

O Medo do Senhor manifestado pelo rei e pelo povo de Nínive

Jonas 3:5 Assim, o povo de Nínive acreditou em Deus, proclamou jejum e vestiu um pano de saco, do maior ao menor deles. 6 Então chegou a notícia ao rei de Nínive; e levantou-se do trono, largou a túnica, cobriu-se com um saco de roupa e sentou-se em cinzas. 7 E ele mandou proclamá-la e publicá-la por toda Nínive por decreto do rei e de seus nobres, dizendo,

Que nem homem nem fera, pastoreio ou rebanho, prove nada; Não deixe que eles comam ou bebam água. 8 Mas que homem e animal sejam cobertos com um pano de saco, e clamem poderosamente a Deus; Sim, que cada um se afaste do seu caminho maligno e da violência que está em suas mãos. 9 Quem pode dizer se Deus se voltará e cederá, e se afastará de Sua ira feroz, para que não pereçamos?

JESUS ENSINA UMA IMPORTANTE ADVERTÊNCIA SOBRE O TEMOR DE DEUS

Mateus 10:27 “Tudo o que eu vos disser nas trevas, falem na luz; E o que ouvirem no ouvido, preguem nos telhados. 28 E não temam aqueles que matam o corpo, mas não podem matar a alma. Mas sim temer Aquele que é capaz de destruir tanto a alma quanto o corpo no inferno. 29 Dois pardais não são vendidos por uma moeda de cobre? E nenhum deles cai no chão sem a vontade do seu Pai. 30 Mas os próprios cabelos da sua cabeça estão todos contados. 31 Não temas, portanto; Você vale mais do que muitos pardais.

As revelações compartilhadas por Jesus devem ser compartilhadas do telhado da casa (para conhecimento público)

Filhos de Deus não devem se intimidar pela ameaça de perseguição pública para declarar a Palavra do Senhor. Jesus ensina Seus discípulos a preservar nossas almas em vez de sucumbir ao medo da perseguição.

MEDO REVERENCIAL DE DEUS

Esse é o temor de Deus que inspira o crente a amar, respeitar e obedecer a Deus.

Êxodo 3:6 Além disso, Ele disse: “Eu sou o Deus de teu pai — o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaque e o Deus de Jacó.” E Moisés escondeu o rosto, pois tinha medo de olhar para Deus.

Deus reconhece que essa é uma resposta normal.

Jeremias 5:22 Não temes de mim?’ diz o SENHOR. ‘Não tremerá com a Minha presença, que colocou a areia como limite do mar, por decreto perpétuo, para que ela não possa passar além dele? E embora suas ondas se agitem de um lado para o outro, ainda assim não podem prevalecer; Embora rujam, não conseguem passar por cima.

Hebreus 12:21 E tão aterrorizante foi a visão que Moisés disse: “Estou extremamente assustado e tremendo.”

A Presença de Deus constantemente inspirava medo. O temor de Deus do crente não se baseia no medo da morte e do castigo, pois Cristo nos libertou disso (Romanos 8:1). Como a Presença de Deus inspirava medo, Deus anunciava “Não tema” sempre que Sua Presença se manifestava.

Apocalipse 1:17 E quando O vi, caí aos seus pés como morto. Mas Ele colocou a mão direita sobre mim, dizendo: “Não tenhas medo; Eu sou o Primeiro e o Último.

Deus, nosso Pai Celestial, que nos ama, também é um fogo consumidor (Hebreus 12:29)
